Search + Transition Process

 

The bishop search and transition process is deeply centered in prayer and discernment. During this time of transition in the Diocese of Chicago, the Standing Committee asks for prayers for the church, our diocese, our clergy and lay leaders, our retiring bishop, and those who may be discerning a call to become the13th Bishop of Chicago. May

bishop search & nomination committee formed

The Bishop Search & Nomination Committee prepares a profile of the diocese, seeks and interviews candidates, organizes and hosts a discernment retreat, and presents a slate of nominees to the Standing Committee.

 

August - September

LISTENING SESSIONS

The Bishop Search & Nomination Committee invites all clergy and laypeople to attend a bishop search listening session. What they learn will guide them as they prepare the Diocesan Profile.

DIOCESAN PROFILe

The Diocesan Profile describes who we are, what we believe, and what we are seeking in our next bishop.

 
 

Applications Open

Applications are received and reviewed by the Search & Nomination Committee.


2020

 

January

APPLICATIONS CLOSE

Following the application period, the Search & Nomination Committee enters a period of discernment.

 

 

April

Candidate Discernment Retreat

Select candidates are invited to a retreat with members of the Search & Nomination Committee for extended conversation and mutual discernment.

 

SLATE ANNOUNCED

Following the Discernment Retreat, the Search & Nomination Committee presents a slate of nominees to the Standing Committee.

 

PETITIONS OPEN

The Standing Committee oversees a brief petition process that allows additional candidates to be added to the slate.

candidate walkabouts

The Transition Committee organizes Walkabout events across the diocese. Walkabouts provide an opportunity to meet the candidates, ask them questions, and help them learn more about the Diocese of Chicago.


 

June

 

Electing Convention

The Special Convention for the Election of the Thirteenth Bishop of Chicago will take place at St James Cathedral in Chicago on June 20, 2020. Clergy and lay delegates will cast ballots in accordance with the constitution and canons of the diocese. More information will be coming soon.
