The bishop search and transition process is deeply centered in prayer and discernment. During this time of transition in the Diocese of Chicago, the Standing Committee asks for prayers for the church, our diocese, our clergy and lay leaders, our retiring bishop, and those who may be discerning a call to become the13th Bishop of Chicago. The Bishop Search & Nomination Committee prepares a profile of the diocese, seeks and interviews candidates, organizes and hosts a discernment retreat, and presents a slate of nominees to the Standing Committee.
Our Diocesan Profile describes who we are, what we believe, and what we are seeking in our next bishop.
Applications are received and reviewed by the Search & Nomination Committee.
Following the application period, the Search & Nomination Committee enters a period of discernment.
Candidate Discernment Retreat
Select candidates are invited to a retreat with members of the Search & Nomination Committee for extended conversation and mutual discernment.
Following the Discernment Retreat, the Search & Nomination Committee presents a slate of nominees to the Standing Committee.
The Standing Committee oversees a brief petition process that allows additional candidates to be added to the slate.
The Transition Committee organizes Walkabout events around the diocese. These events provide an opportunity to meet the candidates, ask them questions, and help them learn more about our diocese.
The Election Convention for 13th Bishop of Chicago is a special convention for the purpose of electing our next bishop. Both clergy and lay delegates will cast ballots.
