The bishop search and transition process is deeply centered in prayer and discernment. During this time of transition in the Diocese of Chicago, the Standing Committee asks for prayers for the church, our diocese, our clergy and lay leaders, our retiring bishop, and those who may be discerning a call to become the13th Bishop of Chicago. The Bishop Search & Nomination Committee prepares a profile of the diocese, seeks and interviews candidates, organizes and hosts a discernment retreat, and presents a slate of nominees to the Standing Committee.
August - October
The Bishop Search & Nomination Committee held Listening Sessions across the diocese beginning in August through early October. Input received from clergy and laypeople will help guide them as they prepare the Diocesan Profile.
September - October
Bishop Search Survey
Data collected from the Bishop Search Survey will be used to supplement input from Listening Sessions, and will guide the Search & Nomination Committee as they write the Diocesan Profile.
Bishop Transition Committee Formed
The Transition Committee will play a role in planning and executing several major events, beginning with candidate walkabouts in June 2020; will help care for the needs of the candidates, the bishop-elect, Bishop Lee, and their families; and will educate and inform the diocese throughout the transition. Standing Committee expects to announce the committee November 13.
The Diocesan Profile is a detailed description of the Diocese of Chicago that helps applicants learn more about the diocese and its people.
Applications are received and reviewed by the Search & Nomination Committee.
Following the application period, the Search & Nomination Committee enters a period of discernment.
Candidate Discernment Retreat
Select candidates are invited to a retreat with members of the Search & Nomination Committee for extended conversation and mutual discernment.
Following the Discernment Retreat, the Search & Nomination Committee presents a slate of nominees to the Standing Committee.
The Standing Committee oversees a brief petition process that allows additional candidates to be added to the slate.
The Transition Committee organizes Walkabout events across the diocese. Walkabouts provide an opportunity to meet the candidates, ask them questions, and help them learn more about the Diocese of Chicago.
The Special Convention for the Election of the Thirteenth Bishop of Chicago will take place at St James Cathedral in Chicago on June 20, 2020. Clergy and lay delegates will cast ballots in accordance with the constitution and canons of the diocese. More information will be coming soon.
