Learn more about the Bishop Search + Transition

The bishop search and transition requires the gifts, skills, and talents of many people from across the diocese. The Standing Committee forms two committees of lay leaders and clergy — the Search & Nomination Committee and the Transition Committee.

The bishop search and transition is a lengthy process, beginning with the announcement of Bishop Lee’s plan to retire in August 2020 and concluding with the Ordination and Consecration of the 13th Bishop of Chicago led by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry on January 9, 2021.

The Search & Nomination Committee will spend several months listening to voices from across the diocese and creating a Diocesan Profile, a description of who we are, what we believe, and what we seek in our next bishop. Listening sessions are scheduled in August and September.

O God, by your grace you have called us in this Diocese to a goodly fellowship of faith. Bless our clergy, and all our people. Grant that your Word may be truly preached and truly heard, your Sacraments faithfully administered and faithfully received. By your Spirit, fashion our lives according to the example of your Son, and grant that we may show the power of your love to all among whom we live; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
